Oh Very Young by Cat Stevens

對和我同輩的人來說，提到Cat Stevens，首先想到的應該是 Morning  Has Broken 這首歌。印象尤其深刻的，是小時候放暑假，晚上在家和哥哥打乒乓球，一邊聽FM收音機。到了深夜12點，Morning Has Broken 就出現在耳際。

但  Cat Stevens的歌之中，歌詞讓我感觸最多的，卻是 Oh Very Young。第一次聽到這首歌的時間點可能更早，但到了我讀高中時，自己的英文程度才足以理解歌詞大概的意思。那時用第一代的 Sony Walkman播放 Cat Stevens的 Greatest Hits 卡帶，一邊作功課。當從耳機聽到這句

And though you want them to last forever
You know they never will

然後女和聲重複
(you know they never will)

感覺像是被雷劈了，整個人楞住。當下意識到，這是多麼傳神地描繪出了人生最根本的悲哀。每個人，不論貧富貴賤，不管做了多少的努力，想在這世界永遠的待著，卻都如另一句歌詞所說：

You're only dancin' on this earth for a short while 

終究得屈服於沒人可 last forever 的現實。

數十年後的現在，我年過半百，對許多事物的感受比年輕時麻痺得多。然而我再看這歌詞，還是感觸頗深。Cat Stevens 沒用什麼高深的字，也沒有高雅的隱喻。但他用童謠般的簡單詞曲，卻能觸碰到令人省思的哲理。讓人聽到歌，會停下來手邊的事，思索一下我們存在的意義。

ELP Laser Vinyl Disc Player Upgrades 雷射黑膠唱盤, Part 2 (in Chinese)

概括說來, ELP 的整體音質仍比不上傳統盤。尤其是複雜的樂段，可能因為雷射解析度不夠，細節少了很多。但在簡單編制的獨奏及獨唱，它的音色極近母帶，沒有傳統盤因摩擦與機械性共振所引起的音染。所有的傳統盤，都會有這種音染, 只是多寡的問題。這是物理學的定律鐵則，無可避免。從這角度來看，聽了 ELP, 可以幫助我們思考如何把傳統盤做得更好, 調出更小的失真。

用ELP播放 Joan Baez 年輕時在 Vanguard 出的現場錄音, 從極低失真的 Quad 靜電喇叭播放出來，人聲的仿真度，可以到令人起雞皮疙瘩的地步。這是傳統盤辦不到的。

幾個朋友, 之前來家裡聽了 ELP，不到幾秒即說難聽，不願仔細一點地思索，分析它的優缺點。玩音響的人，似乎有這共通性：鐵口直斷。我倒希望，大家能認知，每個人都有盲點。第一印象，不見得就可以得到完整的評斷。

Real Luxuries in Life?

I've been reading Palmento: A Sicilian Wine Odyssey, by Robert V. Camuto. A paragraph on pp. 69, left a lasting impression on me:

"...with their business success, still knew how to measure wealth in real luxuries like fresh ricotta or eating your own tomatoes, ..."

He was talking about a successful wine-producing family in Sicily, Italy, regarding their attitude toward quality produce, and nowadays rich folks in the cities are willing to pay obscene prices but most likely still end up having lesser quality. 

Indeed, at the end of the day, the things in life that cannot be acquired by money are the real luxuries.

Azimuth 的調整 Part 1

A： 由於MC唱頭製作的過程，線圈和磁鐵的相對位置幾乎不可能完美的對稱，所以兩聲道要平衡的話，往往要將唱頭轉偏一邊。這步驟要藉助測試唱片和電表或示波器來完成。

B： 但是因為唱針的安裝，通常是垂直於唱頭的底部，所以如果依前述準則來調整，極可能造成針尖和唱片溝槽無法完全密合，影響到循軌力及細節的再生。

這就形成了魚與熊掌的取捨問題。

我自己的看法，到大概10年前左右，是以 A 為原則，調出最寬，最平衡的音場為目標。但近年來，我逐漸以 B 為標的。

主要原因如下：

1： 近年來唱頭的製作精密度大有改進。在取得A最佳化時，通常不會偏離垂直很多。
2： 影響兩聲道的輸出平衡的，還有其他的變因，例如側滑力等。所有的唱臂，包含正切臂在內，都無法完全去除側滑力，而且唱片外圈內圈的大小又不同。

3： 對我來說，大動態時的循軌能力極重要。而且唱針不正，造成循軌力不佳，是無法補救的。而音場不夠對稱 卻可用調整抗滑作部分修正。
